Review of Afghanistan developments

The historical account of Afghan cricket indicates that the sport was introduced to Afghanistan in 1839 by soldiers of the British East India Company stationed in Kandahar, Jalalabad, and Kabul, thereby familiarizing the Afghan people with the game.

Subsequently, during the 1990s, as the conflict in Afghanistan intensified and Afghans started to migrate, Afghan immigrants grew increasingly acquainted with cricket matches in Pakistan and took up the sport.

Following the return of Afghan refugees from Pakistan to their homeland, cricket emerged in the back streets of Afghanistan. Children began to carry a cricket bat alongside other games, and cricket quickly gained popularity among the Afghan populace.

The Afghanistan Cricket Federation was founded in 1995. During the initial period of Taliban rule, cricket, along with several other sports, faced a ban; however, in 2000, cricket was legalized, leading to the establishment of the Afghanistan Cricket Federation. In 2001, the Afghan cricket team gained membership in the International Cricket Council (ICC).

In 2003, the Afghan national cricket team took part in two tournaments held in Pakistan, where they secured their inaugural victory against the formidable Pakistani team. In 2004, the team placed sixth among ten competing nations in the South Asian Games. Furthermore, in 2006, the Afghan cricket team attained notable success by finishing as the runner-up in the Middle East Games held in Mumbai, India.

The national cricket team of Afghanistan subsequently took part in the 2006 Summer Games held in England, where they secured a victory. That same year, the Afghan team finished third in the Asian Cricket Council qualifiers in Malaysia, triumphing over Nepal. In November 2007, Afghan cricketers celebrated their first international tournament win in Kuwait. Following this achievement, the Afghan national cricket team engaged in esteemed international matches and attained considerable success.

The Ghazi Amanullah International Cricket Stadium, Kandahar International Cricket Stadium, and Kabul National Cricket Stadium are the premier cricket venues in Afghanistan.
