The historical account of Afghan cricket indicates that the sport was introduced to Afghanistan in 1839 by soldiers of the British East India Company stationed in Kandahar, Jalalabad, and Kabul, thereby familiarizing the Afghan people with the game.

In 2003, the Afghan national cricket team took part in two tournaments held in Pakistan, where they secured their inaugural victory against the formidable Pakistani team. In 2004, the team placed sixth among ten competing nations in the South Asian Games. Furthermore, in 2006, the Afghan cricket team attained notable success by finishing as the runner-up in the Middle East Games held in Mumbai, India.
The national cricket team of Afghanistan subsequently took part in the 2006 Summer Games held in England, where they secured a victory. That same year, the Afghan team finished third in the Asian Cricket Council qualifiers in Malaysia, triumphing over Nepal. In November 2007, Afghan cricketers celebrated their first international tournament win in Kuwait. Following this achievement, the Afghan national cricket team engaged in esteemed international matches and attained considerable success.

Rashid Khan is recognized as the most renowned cricketer in Afghanistan. He has gained worldwide recognition by excelling in international leagues, particularly the Indian Premier League. Recently, Rashid Khan made history in the Twenty20 International tournament. By claiming 165 wickets, he surpassed the record of the New Zealand star who had 164 wickets, thus earning the title of the best bowler in the tournament’s history.
Rashid Khan boasts an outstanding record not only in Twenty20 Internationals but also in various other competitions at this level. To date, he has claimed 664 wickets, a figure regarded as the highest in the world.
